Lipstick Hacks for the Perfect Pout
Ok ladies, be honest with me. How many of you have at least 3 lipsticks rolling around in the bottom of your handbag? I know I do! I love a good lippy, and I’ll often pick a new shade to match the outfit I’m wearing that day. But we all know that not all lipsticks are created equal, and real life can be hard on our lips. Between drying out, clumping, and balling product, to us eating, drinking, talking and smooching, finding a lipstick that lasts all day is like the holy grail!
Luckily for you, I have something that could help. No, it’s not a new product (though keep an eye on the next Shop Box!), it’s some tips and hacks I use to get the most out of my favourite lipstick shades, and now you can too. They’re simple, easy, and take less than a minute to do, so they can fit perfectly into your busy routine. So go grab your favourite lippy and let’s get hacking!
The key to a good lipstick application is having a good base. We all prime our faces before we put our foundation on, so why would we not do the same for our lips? Prepping your lips is super easy – all you need is some of your favourite lip balm and a clean mascara wand. You can buy packs of disposable wands online, and if you wash them in-between uses then they’ll last you a long time. Apply your balm, leave it for a minute to sink in a bit, and then gently rub the wand over your lips. This will help any dry or dead skin flake away and leave you with a nice smooth base for your lipstick. Fun fact – not only does this help your lipstick apply better, but it will last longer too!
Warm-up Your Lip Liner
Lip liner is a must if you want those sharp, defined lines. But it can be a challenge to get it applied right. One thing I learned is to always sharpen your liner before each use, and then spend a few seconds warming it up between your index finger and thumb. Just hold it there for a few seconds and let your body heat seep into the pencil. This will soften the liner just a tad, which helps it go on nice and smoothly. No tugging, no jumping, and no unexpected gaps in your lip liner!
Make it Matte
Is your favourite lipstick a silk when all you want is it to be a matte? Don’t worry – we’ve all been there! But the good news is you can turn any glossy lipstick into a nice matte with just one trick. Find yourself a powder blush that’s close to your lipstick colour. It doesn’t have to be a perfect match – just in the ballpark, but you should make sure it’s not a shimmery shade. Apply your lipstick, and then press some of the blush onto your lips with your finger. Be careful not to rub it in, or to use too much. You literally just want a swipe of the blush and to press it into your lip colour. And voila – instant matte lip colour!
X Marks the Spot
We’re all built different, and not all of us were born with a gorgeous pout and defined cupids bow. But just because you don’t have it naturally, doesn’t mean you can’t get it. And you don’t need any pricey surgery or injections to do it! All you need is your favourite lip liner. Instead of just outlining your lips, start by drawing an X. Draw a diagonal line that extends down from the highest point of your top lip, and do the same thing on the other side. Then continue your lip liner as usual. When you’re done, you’ll have a perfect cupid’s bow every time.
Blot and Set
Feathering, smudging and leaking are all common, frustrating lipstick problems. But you can prevent it really easily. Once your lips are perfectly coated in your favourite lipstick, make sure you blot them properly. This means taking a tissue, napkin or piece of blotting paper and put it between your lips. Gently squeeze together to remove any excess product from your lips. It’s this excess product that slips off your lips, and removing it shouldn’t affect your lip colour at all. Don’t forget the corners! Once that’s done, use a translucent powder to set your lipstick in place and keep it on your lips all day long.
These lipstick hacks might seem simple, but they will help you keep up your A-game every day.
